A private branch exchange is just like a telephone-network phone system, except it has different wiring between each office in the private branch exchange. Much like how a conventional public switched telephone network works with ten numbers in each block, each individual office in a private branch exchange will have its own telephone number. The benefit of a PBX is that each office in the private branch exchange will have its own IP address, which makes for a much more secure way of making telephone calls.
