The most apparent proof of Softphone companies is that they offer a low-cost service for long-distance and international calls. When you purchase a Softphone, you are actually making an agreement with the Softphone Company, not your home phone company. Therefore all your traditional home phone companies have no relationship with them. This allows them to provide customer service amiably, and they don’t need to worry about extra competition from smaller companies. This gives them the ability to provide basic voice features such as video, music, and web conferencing.

VoIP companies: The cons

 Some people may not feel they need or want to pay for additional features that come with a Softphone. Although the call center is handy, many people consider it unnecessary. For example, they can make local, STD, and toll-free calls for a reasonable price. Generally, the oil company is its own brand and has nothing to do with traditional telephone service.

The customer support aspect of VoIP companies is often not considered as advantageous as the product itself. However, VoIP technology is still relatively new, and many potential customers have not even heard of it. Because of this, there are plenty of loopholes in the process of actually receiving and making calls. So, for example, losing contact with your long-distance partner can be easy. And not knowing why they did not answer their phones or where they were trying to send messages. When a problem occurs with a Softphone, it’s hard to find out how to troubleshoot it. You must first identify the problem, then contact your vendor, which can sometimes be very hard.

A significant disadvantage of a softphone is the cancellation fee. This fee is a percentage of the overall cost of the call. And you don’t even receive a bill at the end. So, for example, suppose you’re paying $.10 a minute for your long-distance partner’s voice. In that case, you’re looking at potentially spending hundreds of dollars for just one year! So if you’re not using your voice card, you have essentially been hit with high-interest debt!


The final thing to consider is the reliability of your internet telephony service. While there are many VoIP services, many (though not all) are reliable. Some VoIP companies have been hit with the reliability issue because they have chosen to implement VoIP over IP. Others still have old IP systems that are problematic.

So which ones should you choose? That depends mainly on how you use your phone. Use your voice card only for essential or personal calls. You won’t have much of a problem with internet telephony. But, if you use your voice card daily, you’ll probably want a traditional landline or VOIP provider. This is perhaps the best way to go if you’re on a tight budget.
